ADDRESSING DISENGAGEMENT

In Australia, the challenge of boys' disengagement from education is real. To address this concern, we present ten key issues and corresponding solution ideas below, all in alignment with the Educare model. Let's rekindle the love for learning and empower our boys for a successful educational journey.

1. High Drop-Out Rates

Implement mentorship programs where older students, guided by the values-based Educare model, support and inspire younger students to stay engaged and complete their education.

2. Academic Underachievement

Integrate values-based learning into the curriculum, emphasising that academic success aligns with character development, empowering boys to see the value in education.

3. Behavioural Issues

Emphasise the practice of mindfulness and self-awareness through Educare methods, helping boys manage their emotions, reduce behavioural issues, and stay engaged in the learning process.

4. Gender Stereotyping

Promote open discussions and values-based education about respecting diversity, breaking free from stereotypes, and fostering an environment where boys feel safe to be themselves.

5. Mental Health Issues

Incorporate emotional well-being into the curriculum, integrating Educare practices like "Quiet Time" and "iRest" to support boys' mental health and keep them engaged in the learning process.

6. Bullying and Peer Pressure

Create a culture of non-violence and empathy using Educare's "Non-violence" value, instilling the importance of kindness and respect, which can help reduce bullying and peer pressure.

7. Lack of Relevance

Connect academic subjects with real-world applications through storytelling and Thought of the Week, illustrating the relevance of education to boys' lives.

8. Early Intervention

Identify struggling students early and provide holistic support through values-based Educare methods, such as "Community Service" or "Let Me Learn," to address their specific needs.

9. Alternative Education Models

Offer alternative education models like Toogoolawa School's approach, which focuses on holistic development and values-based learning to re-engage boys in education.

10. Importance of Parental Involvement

Encourage parents to actively engage in their child's education by participating in the school's programs and modelling the Human Values in their own lives.
